GOL finally announces Wi-Fi entertainment service onboard

Access to the portal content will be free and the system is being implemented in 35 aircraft operating 250 daily flights mainly in the route Rio and São Paulo. Passengers can access content using their own electronic devices.

From September 1, Gol aircraft will now have a brand new service. The airline will launch the "Gol no Ar," on-board entertainment platform that will have content that may be accessed by passengers' on their own mobile devices.

Passengers can access the system in the Gol flight through electronic devices with Wi-Fi, which will end up reinforcing their rivalry with TAM, which already offers Internet in some domestic flights. The content is updated daily as the plane lands at some airports (Congonhas, Guarulhos, Santos Dumont, Galeão, Confins, Salvador, Porto Alegre, Brasília, Belém e Fortaleza).

Initially, access will be made for equipment with Wi-Fi, like iPhones, iPads, netbooks and notebooks. "In the future, the product will be available for other types of tablets and smartphones. Innovation is the DNA of the GOL and with great creativity we develop for our customers a choice of onboard entertainment program that offers high quality and a low-cost deployment", said Claudia Pagnano, vice president of marketing and new business from Gol.

The service does not access the Internet (it works like an intranet), but offers a full schedule of entertainment. Through partnerships with media groups, the new service will offer news and articles from newspapers and magazines, TV shows, sports, games and various music channels. When connecting the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or any kind of laptop to the Wi-Fi network of the plane, you can access via browser a portal with all the content: News (CBN, and the brazilian Abril), videos (Globosat channels) and up games. In reality this is an Intranet service that is updated whenever the plane is on the ground.

The installation of this kind of equipment in the company's fleet will be gradual. The system is already deployed in 35 aircraft and, at this time, the company will offer the product at about 250 daily flights, mainly in the shuttle between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Plans include expanding the service to about 380 daily flights by the end of the year.

The service has no additional cost to the passenger, who only need to have a device that can connect to the Wi-Fi. Great news for travelers because it is more an option for the customer, especially those who take their iPhone or iPad always with it. GOL is to be congratulated for the initiative.
