Huge earthquake reaches Acre at Peruvian border

The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5 and occurred at a depth of 580.5 km. Epicenter is located 127 km from the city of Cruzeiro do Sul at Brazilian State of Acre, near from the peruvian border.

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.5 struck Acre on Monday (24), according to the Center of the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake started at 11h18 local (13h18 GMT), at a depth of 580.5 kilometers, according to the American agency and the epicenter is located 127 km from the city of Cruzeiro do Sul at Brazilian State of Acre, near from the peruvian border and far some 600 km (370 miles) from the Peruvian Capital Lima.

The quake were felt something around 210 km (130 miles) from its epicenter, Cruzeiro do Sul (Acre state). However the seismologists aren't anticipating major damage just beacuse it happened on the underground almost 145 km (90 miles) from the earth's surface.

The Associate Press reports the area as one of the world's most seismically active since August 15 at 2007,was the most recent deadly quake, when 596 people we killed during 7.9-magnitude temblor.

AFP journalists in Lima said they felt light tremors in the capital and authorities in neighboring Ecuador said the quake was also felt strongly there, but again there were no reports of material damage or casualties.

In 2009, more than 140 earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.0 and above were felt in Peru, which is located on a vast arc that geologists call the Pacific Ring of Fire due to its intense seismic activity.
